The problem

Paying bus fares in cash is slow, and passengers rarely know when the next bus will arrive.

What we built

  • QR-code fare payments designed to work without an internet connection.
  • Route maps from OpenStreetMap, with GPS vehicle tracking and estimated arrival times.
  • A Flutter app with a Django and PostgreSQL backend.

Where it is now

A prototype from KU HackFest 2024. It was not released.

Built with

Flutter, Django, PostgreSQL, OpenStreetMap

About YatraMate

YatraMate is a prototype for paying public transport fares in Nepal by scanning a QR code, even where there is no internet connection. We built it in 48 hours at KU HackFest 2024, held at Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel from 15 to 17 November 2024.

Passengers pay by scanning a QR code, and the app shows the route on a map built from OpenStreetMap, with GPS tracking of the vehicle and estimated arrival times. It is written in Flutter, with a Django backend that generates the codes and records payments, and a PostgreSQL database.
