OffNet

Chat and file sharing between nearby phones, with no internet.

OffNet: stay connected, even without the internet

The problem

When the internet is down, people standing next to each other still cannot send a message or a file.

What we built

  • Phones find each other over the same Wi-Fi, a hotspot or Bluetooth.
  • Messages with sent, delivered and read status, and friends who confirm each other first.
  • Photos and files sent directly, with progress and resume.

About OffNet

OffNet is a prototype app for messaging and sharing files between phones that are close to each other when there is no internet connection. Phones find each other over the same Wi-Fi network, a phone hotspot or Bluetooth, and then talk directly.

Messages show whether they were sent, delivered and read, and two people must confirm each other as friends before they can chat. Photos and files go straight from one phone to the other, with a progress bar and the option to resume an interrupted transfer.

We built OffNet in Flutter in early 2025 as a prototype. It was not published.
